Yes. Anthropic launched Claude for Google Workspace in public beta on October 6, 2026. Paid Claude users can now open Claude in a sidebar inside Google Docs, Google Sheets and Google Slides, where it reads the open file, sees what you have selected and edits the file directly.
The more useful detail is the boundary. The add-on works on the file in front of you, and Google enforces that limit. Claude reaches anything beyond that file only through connectors, attachments or web search that you deliberately turn on.
Evidence note: this explainer is based on Anthropic's launch post and Help Center documentation, the Google Workspace Marketplace listing and Google's Gemini documentation, all checked on October 7, 2026. Choosely has not tested the beta.
Quick answer
Claude for Google Workspace is a beta add-on for Claude Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. One install from the Google Workspace Marketplace adds Claude to Docs, Sheets and Slides.
Inside a file, Claude can answer questions about it, rewrite and restructure documents, build spreadsheet models and formulas, and create or restyle slides. Its edits are saved under your Google identity and appear in version history like any other edit.
The default mode, Ask before edits, waits for approval before each change. Accept all edits lets Claude apply ordinary content edits without stopping. Adding a link, inserting an image from a web address or removing someone's access still requires approval every time. In either mode, Claude cannot share the file, give anyone access or change its owner.
Anthropic also released separate Google Docs, Sheets and Slides connectors that work in the opposite direction: you start in Claude, and it creates or edits Google files from the chat. Neither product is Claude Docs, Anthropic's own document surface inside Claude.
What Anthropic launched
Two products arrived on the same day, and they are easy to confuse.
The Claude for Google Workspace add-on lives inside Google. Install it from the Marketplace, open any Doc, Sheet or Slides deck, then choose Extensions > Claude > Open Claude. The sidebar sits beside the file.
The Google Docs, Sheets and Slides connectors live inside Claude. Paste a Google file link into a chat, or ask for a Google doc, sheet or deck by name, and Claude creates or edits it. On supported setups the file opens in a pane next to the conversation, and you can edit it at the same time. Anthropic says starting from Claude makes more sense when you need a new file or the work spans several files.
One older product adds to the confusion. The original "Claude for Sheets" add-on, which runs =CLAUDE() formulas using a developer API key, is still listed in the Marketplace. It is a different product, billed through the API.
Which Claude plans get it
| Claude plan | Workspace add-on |
|---|---|
| Free | No |
| Pro | Yes (beta) |
| Max | Yes (beta) |
| Team | Yes (beta) |
| Enterprise | Yes (beta) |
You also need a Google account that is allowed to install Marketplace apps. Whether you can install it yourself depends on your Google Workspace admin's Marketplace settings, not on your Claude plan.
Google Workspace super admins can install Claude for everyone, or for specific groups or organizational units. Organizations that block Marketplace apps can allowlist Claude, or admin-install it, which works even while user installs are blocked. On the Claude side, admins control which connectors, skills and models the sidebar inherits.
Anthropic has not published a country or language list for the beta. It also has not said which plans get the new live-edit connectors. Neither should be assumed.
What Claude can actually access
Less than many users will assume.
When you send a message, Claude reads the relevant parts of the open file plus your current selection. Anthropic says the add-on cannot see other Drive files, your email or your calendar, and that Google enforces the single-file limit at the permission level. The Marketplace listing matches that: its file permissions cover only documents, spreadsheets and presentations the add-on is running in. The listing also requests your primary email address and basic profile information, which Anthropic's two-permission summary leaves out. Neither grants access to other files.
The boundary moves only when you move it. The sidebar can use connectors your Claude account or organization has enabled. A Google Drive connector can reach other files, and a Salesforce connector can pull account history into a deck. You can also attach up to 20 files per message or turn on web search, which is off by default.
That design is the strongest part of the launch. Installing the add-on does not quietly turn Claude into a Drive-wide agent.
Ask before edits vs Accept all edits
Ask before edits is the default. Each change appears as an approval card with a plain-language summary, and Claude waits for you to click Allow.
Accept all edits lets Claude work through a task and apply ordinary content edits without stopping. The name oversells it. Adding a link, inserting an image from a web address and removing anyone's access still trigger a Security review in either mode, and those prompts have no "always allow" option. Some requests are refused outright, even if you ask:
- sharing the file or giving someone access;
- changing ownership;
- creating menus or scheduled automations;
- loading arbitrary web pages into the file.
For shared or consequential files, Ask before edits is the sensible starting point. Accept all edits fits repetitive, recoverable work.
What Claude can do in Google Docs
Claude can rewrite a passage in place without disturbing the surrounding formatting, cut a long brief down, restructure sections, turn notes into a table, fix headings and numbering, and check a contract for terms that are used but never defined. It can read and edit the content of every document tab, but it cannot create, rename or reorder tabs.
For bigger rewrites, Claude can propose edits as cards in the sidebar that you apply or dismiss one at a time. Anthropic calls these suggestion cards, but they are separate from Google Docs Suggesting mode. When Claude changes the document, the change lands as a direct edit.
The add-on cannot read, reply to or resolve Google Docs comments, and it cannot accept or reject existing suggestions. Paste a comment into the chat if you want Claude to act on it. The separate Google Docs connector, used from Claude, can work with comments and suggestions. That split is why "Claude works with Google Docs" now needs a qualifier.
What Claude can do in Google Sheets
Sheets is the most consequential part of the release. Claude can:
- explain how a total is calculated and flag hardcoded values;
- write and repair formulas;
- build pivot tables and native Sheets charts, and add tabs;
- normalize messy data;
- build multi-tab models, such as a three-statement model from an inputs tab.
For joins and cleanup, Anthropic says Claude can pull a range into Python and write the results back. A user can start from an empty sheet, attach source files and ask for a report with a tab per team and a summary chart.
The limits are specific. Connected Sheets tabs backed by live BigQuery data cannot be read or edited, so extract the rows into a regular tab first. Claude cannot create triggers, custom menus or scheduled refreshes.
What Claude can do in Google Slides
Claude can create new slides from the deck's existing layouts and theme, split an overloaded slide, make titles parallel and restyle a deck to match its title slide. Anthropic says it can then check its own work for overlapping objects, content running off the slide and hard-to-read text.
Charts need care. Charts the add-on creates are inserted as images rather than linked Sheets charts, so they do not update when the numbers change. Claude cannot refresh an existing linked chart, and it needs approval each time it inserts an image from a web address. Treat this as presentation help that still needs a human pass before a deck goes out.
Edits land in version history, under your name
Claude edits the file as you. Google records the changes under your name, so collaborators see edits attributed to you rather than to a separate Claude account. Undo and File > Version history work as usual.
The conversation itself stays private. It is saved locally in your browser for that file and does not sync across devices, browsers or copies of the file. Collaborators see the edits, not the chat.
Version history is a real advantage over Claude Docs, which Anthropic documents as not yet having it.
What the add-on still cannot do
It works only on the file it is opened in. It cannot open, create or copy other Drive files, and it cannot export the file to PDF or download it.
The sidebar must stay open. Closing it stops the task, although switching to another browser tab is fine. Google caps a single extension operation at about six minutes, so large jobs should run in stages, such as one tab or ten slides at a time.
Chrome, Edge and Safari are supported. In Firefox the sidebar loads but actions do not complete. Voice dictation is not available.
Anthropic says several of these limits are deliberate, because the permissions needed to lift them would widen what the add-on can access.
The connectors: starting from Claude instead
The Google Docs, Sheets and Slides connectors are separate from the existing Gmail, Calendar and Drive connectors. With them, Claude can:
- create new Google files;
- edit existing ones live in a pane beside the chat;
- work with comments and suggestions in Docs.
The live pane works on the web in Chrome, and in Claude Desktop with the built-in browser turned on. Elsewhere, the file opens in Google instead.
Access follows your Google permissions. Claude can open and change only files your connected Google account can already open and change. That also means it can edit anything you can edit.
Sharing works differently here. The Docs, Sheets and Slides connectors do not share files, but the Google Drive connector can share, move and trash them, asking for approval before each action by default. On Team and Enterprise plans, owners decide whether members can let those actions run without asking, and an Owner or Primary Owner must enable the connectors before anyone can authenticate.
The Slides connector has its own beta gap. Claude cannot add charts to Google Slides through it, and Slides edits may not appear live in the pane.
Add-on vs connectors vs Claude Docs
| Product | Where you start | Main job |
|---|---|---|
| Claude for Google Workspace add-on | Inside a Google Doc, Sheet or Slides file | Read and edit the file already open |
| Google Docs, Sheets and Slides connectors | Inside Claude | Create, open and edit Google files from a chat |
| Claude Docs and Claude Slides | Inside Claude | Create Anthropic-hosted documents and decks |
A Claude Doc can be exported to Google Docs, but that produces a copy. It is a different thing from running Claude inside a live Google Doc. Permissions, collaboration, version history and data handling differ across all three.
Does it use your normal Claude limits?
Anthropic has not said.
The add-on documentation says the sidebar offers the same models available on your plan. It does not explain how add-on activity counts against plan limits. Anthropic's general note on shared usage names claude.ai, Claude Code and Claude Desktop, but not the Workspace add-on. Claude Docs, by contrast, is explicitly documented as counting toward plan limits.
Until Anthropic documents it, assume neither a separate free allowance nor an identical meter. Heavy Sheets or deck work is worth watching on the usage page.
Security and privacy footnotes
Anthropic says content sent through the add-on is not used to train its models. The open file, your prompts and attachments are still sent to Claude to do the work. For Pro and Max that falls under the Consumer Terms. For Team and Enterprise it falls under the Commercial Terms and Data Processing Addendum. Inputs and outputs are deleted within 30 days, subject to Anthropic's documented exceptions.
Enterprise buyers should read the exceptions closely. Anthropic says the Compliance API, customer-managed encryption keys and OpenTelemetry audit export apply to the add-on. Several things do not:
- The add-on does not inherit custom data-retention settings.
- Zero Data Retention is not available.
- Third-party inference through Amazon Bedrock, Google Vertex AI, Azure AI Foundry or an LLM gateway is not supported.
- HIPAA-ready organizations should not use it with protected health information.
"Enterprise supported" does not mean every Enterprise configuration is supported.
Anthropic's Google connector documentation sets different rules. Retrieved data is stored with the associated chat until you delete it. Anthropic says it does not train on Gmail, Drive or Calendar connector data, with a caveat for consumer accounts that have opted into training: connector content copied into chats can be used.
Files from outside your organization carry prompt-injection risk. Anthropic says Claude treats document text as data, labels hidden text and is designed not to follow embedded instructions to share the file, fetch a link or contact anyone. Reviewing proposed actions is still the user's job.
Claude vs Gemini inside Google Workspace
The old shorthand, "Gemini is inside Workspace and Claude is not," is out of date. Plenty of comparison pages still repeat it.
The two now overlap heavily on in-file work. Google documents Gemini drafting and refining Docs, building or editing entire spreadsheets, and creating slides that match a deck's theme. Claude covers the same ground through the add-on, plus Python-backed data work in Sheets.
The structural difference is context. Gemini is Google's first-party assistant. Depending on plan and admin settings, it can draw on Drive, Gmail and the web, and on business plans on Chat as well. Claude's add-on starts with one file and expands only through Claude connectors, attachments and web search you enable.
There is no controlled head-to-head evidence that either assistant performs better inside Workspace, and Choosely has not run one. The useful split is architectural. Gemini makes more sense when the job should draw on Google's wider Workspace data. Claude makes more sense when it is already the preferred model and the goal is to use it inside the file without switching assistants.
Does this replace Google AI Pro?
For one narrow job, it might. If a personal user already pays for Claude Pro or Max and wanted Google AI Pro only for an assistant that edits Docs, Sheets and Slides, Claude now covers that job.
The rest of the Google bundle still has value. Google AI Pro also includes higher Gemini app limits, 5 TB of storage and Gemini features across Google apps, and Gemini keeps first-party access to Gmail and Drive context. Google AI plans are personal-account products. Business users on eligible Google Workspace plans typically have Gemini included already, so there may be no separate subscription to cancel.
The right question is whether Claude now covers the specific Workspace job you were paying another AI product to do. For some users, the answer just changed.
Who should turn it on
Turn it on if you already rely on Claude and spend a real share of the day in Docs, Sheets or Slides. The strongest early cases are:
- long-document rewrites without copy-paste;
- spreadsheet analysis and model building;
- data cleanup;
- turning notes into decks;
- using Claude skills or connected business data inside a Google file.
Start with Ask before edits on anything consequential, and move to Accept all edits once the task is repetitive and easy to undo.
Who should wait
Wait if any of these apply:
- Your organization needs Zero Data Retention, HIPAA-ready handling or inference through its own cloud provider.
- Your Docs workflow runs on comments and suggestions.
- You need a task to keep running after the sidebar closes.
Admins should also treat a domain-wide install as a write-capable integration rather than a convenience. The add-on makes real changes to production files under each user's identity.
Choosely verdict
Claude for Google Workspace closes a real gap. Existing Claude users can now work inside Docs, Sheets and Slides without using copy-paste as the integration layer. The permission design is also narrower than the headline suggests: one file by default, with everything else added deliberately.
Gemini remains Google's native assistant, with deeper first-party access to Workspace data, and nothing here changes that. What changed is simpler. If Claude is the model you already prefer, you no longer have to leave the Google file to use it.
Keep your AI stack current
Claude's Google Workspace access is exactly the kind of capability that can change whether another tool or subscription still earns its place. Stack Intelligence keeps the tools you rely on visible as plans, capabilities and access change.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use Claude directly in Google Docs?
Yes. Claude for Google Workspace is in public beta on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans. One Marketplace install adds the Claude sidebar to Docs, Sheets and Slides.
Is Claude for Google Workspace free?
No. The add-on requires a paid Claude plan, and the Free plan is not included.
Can Claude edit a Google Doc automatically?
Yes. Ask before edits, the default, requires approval for each change. Accept all edits applies ordinary content changes without stopping, but links, images from web addresses and removing access still need approval every time.
Can Claude access my whole Google Drive?
The add-on cannot. Google limits it to the file it is opened in. Claude can reach other files only if you separately enable a connector such as Google Drive.
Can Claude edit Google Sheets?
Yes. Anthropic documents formulas, pivot tables, native charts, new tabs, data cleanup, Python-backed joins and full spreadsheet models.
Can Claude create Google Slides?
Inside the add-on, Claude can add new slides to the deck you have open. To create a new Google Slides file, use the Google Slides connector from Claude.
Do Claude's edits appear in Google version history?
Yes. Edits are made under your identity and appear in the file's normal version history.
Can Claude share a Google Doc for me?
The add-on cannot share the file, give access or change ownership. From Claude itself, the Google Drive connector can share files, with approval before each action by default.
Is Claude better than Gemini in Google Workspace?
There is no controlled evidence for a universal winner. Gemini has deeper first-party access to Workspace data, while Claude now has a genuine in-file workflow for people who already use it.
Does the add-on use my normal Claude usage limits?
Anthropic has not documented this yet. Treat it as an open beta question.
