Yes. GPT-6 Luna is rolling out to ChatGPT Free. OpenAI announced the release on October 7 and said the Free and Go rollout starts October 8. Those are OpenAI's dates, and access is staged, so your account may not show it yet.
GPT-6 Sol and Luna have been in ChatGPT Work and Codex since September 22. Luna had also reached Free and Go through the desktop app. This release expands them into ordinary Chat, the part of ChatGPT most people use. OpenAI says the models in Work and Codex are unchanged. It also adds Intelligent UI: answers that can include diagrams, calculators and other controls you use inside the conversation.
Which GPT-6 model does each ChatGPT plan get?
OpenAI's announcement and release notes set the split:
| ChatGPT plan | GPT-6 model in Chat | Announced rollout start |
|---|---|---|
| Free | GPT-6 Luna | October 8 |
| Go | GPT-6 Luna | October 8 |
| Plus | GPT-6 Sol | October 7 |
| Pro | GPT-6 Sol; Pro effort uses GPT-6 Pro, powered by Astra | October 7 |
| Business | GPT-6 Sol; Pro effort uses GPT-6 Pro, powered by Astra | October 7 |
| Enterprise | GPT-6 Sol; Astra-powered Pro effort where enabled by workspace admins | October 7 |
| Edu | Not named in the announcement | Not announced |
OpenAI calls the rollout global and has not published activation times for Australia or any other region. Enterprise admins control Sol and Astra access separately, according to OpenAI’s Enterprise documentation.
GPT-6 Luna vs Sol in ChatGPT
For most people, the difference is which one your plan includes. Go is a paid plan, and it still gets Luna. Moving from Free to Go buys higher limits on uploads, image generation and data analysis. It does not buy Sol.
OpenAI says both Chat versions are tuned for everyday conversation. In Work and Codex, it describes Luna as its most efficient model for focused, high-volume tasks. It has not published a Chat-specific comparison of the two, and Choosely has not tested them side by side. API benchmarks would not settle the question anyway, because ChatGPT adds its own instructions, tools and settings.

Is GPT-6 now the default?
On eligible paid plans, yes, once the rollout reaches the account. According to OpenAI's Chat model guide, GPT-6 replaces Latest in the model menu, and existing Latest selections move to GPT-6 at the same effort.
An explicit GPT-5.6 Sol selection stays on GPT-5.6. Intelligent UI requires GPT-6, so a paid user who pinned GPT-5.6 Sol needs to switch the picker to GPT-6 to use the new interactive answers.
The picker says GPT-6 and does not mention Sol. Two other names are easy to confuse with it:
- GPT-6.1 Sol is a newer Sol model for Work and Codex. It is not the Chat option.
- GPT-6 Pro is the Pro effort setting on Pro, Business and Enterprise, powered by GPT-6 Astra. Plus gets Astra in Work and Codex only. Our Astra explainer untangles the naming.
What is ChatGPT Intelligent UI?
Intelligent UI lets GPT-6 build part of an answer as an interface when that helps. OpenAI's launch examples include an explorable bicycle diagram, a retirement savings calculator, a bill splitter and a game played inside the chat.
The benefit shows up after the first answer. A paragraph about compound growth needs another prompt every time you change the contribution. A calculator lets you change the number yourself.
OpenAI says it built a library of native components and a compiler that renders the interface progressively while the model writes, with the model deciding how the pieces fit together. Plain text answers remain possible, and no special prompt is needed.
A tidy interface can still rest on a wrong assumption. Check the inputs and formulas of any calculator before relying on its numbers.
GPT-6 can also start answering before it finishes thinking, then add findings without another prompt. OpenAI says that on questions needing web search, GPT-6 Instant begins answering 44% sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant. The figure comes from OpenAI's own evaluation and measures when an answer starts. It says nothing about total completion time, and OpenAI does not say whether it covers Luna, Sol or both.
Where Intelligent UI works
OpenAI's help page says Intelligent UI is rolling out on the web and in updated apps. Update the mobile app if you do not see it. Older ChatGPT desktop apps for macOS and Windows do not support it, and OpenAI sends those users to the web.
It works with GPT-6 from Instant through Extra High, on whichever levels your plan includes. It does not work with Pro effort, which still runs on GPT-6 Astra. On Pro, Business and Enterprise, picking the strongest option switches the feature off.
Intelligent UI has no separate quota. Your existing model, tool and plan allowances apply.
How to turn off Intelligent UI
On ChatGPT on the web, open Settings and turn off Layout and visuals to reduce visual elements. OpenAI says some visual elements may still appear and that the setting does not restore a classic or text-only mode.
OpenAI documents this control for the web only. Its help page does not say whether the mobile apps have the same switch.
What limits do Free and Go users get?
OpenAI's pricing page advertises unlimited text chats with GPT-6 on Free, subject to abuse guardrails. Uploads, image creation, voice, deep research and memory remain limited. The Go help page says Free and Go both get unlimited everyday text chats, with Go getting higher limits on uploads, image generation and data analysis.
OpenAI has not published a GPT-6 message cap, reset window or fallback model for Free or Go. The Free tier FAQ retains older model-limit wording, while the Go page and Think guidance still name GPT-5.6 Luna. OpenAI’s dated announcement establishes the GPT-6 Luna rollout for everyday Chat. Whether the Think option on Free and Go also moves to GPT-6 remains unclear.
GPT-5.5 retires on October 14
GPT-5.5 has its own deadline. OpenAI's model guide says it leaves ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex on October 14, 2026, on every plan, including Business, Enterprise and Edu. The OpenAI API keeps it.
OpenAI’s migration checklist is written for Codex users signed in with ChatGPT. Check workspace defaults, saved model settings, managed configurations, custom agents, scheduled tasks and scripts for an explicit gpt-5.5 selection. Its suggested replacements are GPT-6 Sol on Plus and higher and GPT-6 Luna on Free and Go. Run a familiar task on the replacement before the deadline.
The API exception matters for developers: this notice does not require moving API-based GPT-5.5 integrations. OpenAI has not confirmed how existing GPT-5.5 chats or custom GPTs will transition.
GPT-5.6 Sol is unaffected. Explicit selections of it remain available.
What should you change now?
Free: use Luna when it arrives. Nothing here justifies paying just to get something labeled GPT-6.
Go: keep paying only if you use the extra uploads, images or analysis. The Chat model is the same Luna Free gets.
Plus: if you pinned GPT-5.6 Sol, switch to GPT-6 to get Sol and Intelligent UI. You have Instant, Medium and High. Extra High and Pro are not included.
Pro, Business and Enterprise: use GPT-6 from Instant to Extra High for interactive answers, and save Pro effort for hard problems that do not need them.
ChatGPT and Codex users with saved model settings: replace gpt-5.5 selections before October 14. API integrations are outside this retirement.

Choosely verdict
The October release is a real upgrade for people who never touch a model picker. Free and Go users get Luna, while eligible Plus and higher accounts receive Sol through the rollout. Intelligent UI is the more visible change, and it earns its place when an answer is something you need to adjust, compare or explore.
Start with the version your plan already includes. Paying more for a different GPT-6 badge is hard to justify until there is evidence that Sol beats Luna on everyday chat. More buttons, by themselves, are a modest achievement.
Frequently asked questions
Is GPT-6 free in ChatGPT?
Yes. GPT-6 Luna is rolling out to Free from October 8, by OpenAI’s date. Your account may get it later because access is staged.
Does ChatGPT Plus include GPT-6 Sol?
Yes, as the rollout reaches your account. Select GPT-6 in the model menu. The picker does not label it Sol. Plus includes Instant, Medium and High, while Extra High and Pro are excluded.
Does ChatGPT Go get Sol?
No. Go receives GPT-6 Luna, like Free. Its paid benefits include higher limits on uploads, image generation and data analysis.
Why don’t I see Intelligent UI?
Check that GPT-6 is selected, that you are below Pro effort, and that you are on the web or an updated app. Older desktop apps do not support it, and the rollout is staged. Turning off Layout and visuals on the web reduces visual elements; some may still appear.
Is GPT-5.6 Sol being retired on October 14?
No. GPT-5.5 retires from ChatGPT, Work and Codex on October 14. The OpenAI API is excluded, and explicit GPT-5.6 Sol selections remain available.
