Notion's new AI allowances could cover a month of ordinary Auto work, but selected models, meetings, and automation need their own budget. Our illustrative working month uses 1,300 of the default 1,500 Standard credits. Add 40 one-hour meetings after December 1 and the estimate becomes 1,700. Connecting an existing ChatGPT plan may help with eligible GPT sessions, but it will not pay for every kind of Notion AI work.
For Notion AI users, the first decision is which work actually risks exceeding its allowance. If you already pay for ChatGPT, the next is whether that work fits the connection's narrower scope. Buying more capacity before answering those questions can solve the wrong problem.
The calculations use published estimates. Choosely has not measured task success or customer bills for this guide.
What changes, and when?
Notion's October 19 announcement introduces the new system for new Business and Enterprise workspaces immediately. Existing workspaces transition on November 2, 2026. The default monthly allowance is 1,500 Standard credits and 500 Select credits per member, although plan and purchase arrangements can change those quantities.
The ChatGPT connection is already available to eligible members and predates this credit announcement: Notion described it in an October 13 release note.
The included Standard and Select allowances and the ability to purchase workspace Notion credits are Business and Enterprise features. Free and Plus users do not receive these allowances. Plan eligibility.
We cannot establish every customer's previous effective allowance. The new system therefore does not prove that everyone's subscription has become worse or more expensive. The useful comparison is between your workload, your actual included allowance, and any extra spending needed to complete it.
Three credit balances, with different jobs
| Balance | Typical work it pays for | Budget rule |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | Auto and eligible everyday AI features, including writing and translation | Default 1,500 per member/month |
| Select | Eligible models chosen manually; the new owner-funded Custom Agent default | Default 500 per member/month |
| Workspace Notion credits | Permitted overflow, directly funded agents, and certain high-consumption models or external agent execution | Purchased shared workspace balance |
The credit guide says Standard and Select cannot be combined, exchanged, transferred to colleagues, or carried into the next month. Monthly resets follow the billing cycle. Check your own allowance and reset date under Settings > Notion AI > Usage.
When an included allowance runs out, affected work pauses unless an administrator allows workspace-credit overflow and the workspace has purchased Notion credits available. The permission is off by default and covers Standard and Select together. Unused Standard credits cannot refill Select, although switching an eligible task to Auto may let you use remaining Standard capacity.
The eligible-features table matters more than the general labels. Some expensive models use workspace credits from their first request. A manually selected model is not automatically covered by Select.
How far 1,500 Standard credits go
Illustrative estimates based on Notion's published task-consumption table. Actual use varies.
Notion's published estimates compare Auto with a specific selected model, Opus 5.5. They do not establish rates for every model or guarantee a fixed number of successful tasks.
| Task class | Auto: Standard estimate | Selected Opus 5.5: Select estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Simple | 5 credits | 50 credits |
| Medium | 10 credits | 85 credits |
| Complex | 25 credits | 150 credits |
Using those estimates alone, 1,500 Standard credits is equivalent to 300 simple, 150 medium, or 60 complex Auto tasks. Choose one of those alternative budgets; they cannot be added together. Other Standard-funded features also draw from the allowance.
A more useful example mixes work across 20 working days:
| Daily Auto work | Calculation | Monthly estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Four simple tasks | 4 x 5 x 20 | 400 Standard |
| Two medium tasks | 2 x 10 x 20 | 400 Standard |
| One complex task | 1 x 25 x 20 | 500 Standard |
| Total | 400 + 400 + 500 | 1,300 Standard |
That leaves an estimated 200 Standard credits for other eligible work. Compare it with your own task mix before deciding whether the allowance is enough.
For the separate Select allowance, the same table implies 10 simple Opus 5.5 tasks, five medium tasks with 75 credits left, or three complex tasks with 50 left. A fourth complex task at the stated estimate would exceed the remaining balance. Actual consumption can differ.
A month containing 20 complex Opus 5.5 tasks would be estimated at 3,000 Select credits, leaving a 2,500-Select-credit shortfall against the included allowance. That scenario needs a different model choice, less usage, or permitted workspace funding. It does not establish that 2,500 purchased Notion credits would cover the extra work.
High-consumption models are another case. Notion's admin documentation says these models use workspace credits directly and are disabled by default until an administrator enables them. Check the selected model's funding route before assuming the 500-credit allowance applies.
A small team's unused credits cannot rescue its busiest member
Five members have default allowances totaling 7,500 Standard and 2,500 Select credits on paper. They still have five separate budgets for each type.
Suppose one member needs an estimated 2,000 Standard credits while the other four use 250 each. Total demand is only 3,000. Yet the busiest member has a 500-credit shortfall, while colleagues have 5,000 unused Standard credits between them.
The distribution of work determines who runs out. Buying another seat does not make its allowance transferable to that busy member. Shared purchased credits can fund approved overflow; personal included allowances cannot be pooled.
Custom Agents require a separate check. Under the new funding rules, an agent normally uses its owner's Select allowance even when teammates use it. Owners can cap spending per agent so one shared agent cannot exhaust their allowance. Any additional owner allowance and permitted workspace credits can follow, provided credits are available. Administrators can instead fund the agent directly and set budgets.
There is an important transition exception: existing Custom Agents created before November 2 continue using shared workspace credits. Inspect the agent's credit source instead of assuming the new personal allowance will pay its bill. A shared automation can otherwise consume the owner's budget faster than their personal usage suggests.
Meeting-heavy users need a second calculation for December
AI Meeting Notes starts consuming Standard credits on December 1, at Notion's estimate of about 10 credits for a one-hour meeting. Before then, this new Standard-credit charge does not apply. Source: Notion's credit guide.
For the mixed working month above, 40 one-hour meetings add roughly 400 credits:
1,300 for Auto work + 400 for meeting notes = 1,700 Standard credits.
The estimated shortfall becomes 200 Standard credits. Ten members with that same workload would have 2,000 Standard credits of combined shortfalls, with each person's allowance assessed separately.
This is why a budget that looks comfortable in November may need adjustment in December. Meeting duration, actual consumption, and other AI features can change the result.
A shortfall is not an invoice. Notion's credit guide treats included Standard and Select balances separately from purchased Notion credits, including under its credit terms. We found no published overflow conversion rate in the reviewed documentation. Do not multiply these shortfalls by the purchase prices below. Monitor actual overflow spending in the Notion credits dashboard from the first uses, then reconcile the first month.
What extra workspace credits actually cost
Your workspace's billing interval determines which credits you can buy. Under Notion's self-service purchase terms, monthly-billed workspaces buy monthly credits at US$10 per 1,000, resetting each cycle. Annual-billed workspaces buy annual credits at US$13 per 1,000, paid upfront and expiring at renewal. Credits added midyear share that expiry date. Account-managed contracts can differ.
| Purchased workspace credits | Monthly-billed workspace | Annual-billed workspace |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000 credits | US$10 per cycle | US$13 until renewal |
| 3,000 credits | US$30 per cycle | US$39 until renewal |
| 5,000 credits | US$50 per cycle | US$65 until renewal |
These hypothetical purchases exclude the workspace subscription, applicable taxes, and local pricing differences. The columns describe the rate attached to each workspace billing interval, with different validity periods. They do not price the Standard or Select shortfalls above.
If you are choosing a seat billing interval, the annual arrangement makes each purchased workspace credit 30% more expensive. Buying 1,000 monthly credits for each of 12 cycles costs US$120; a 12,000-credit annual pool costs US$156 upfront. A US$13 purchase buys only 1,000 annual credits, with no monthly replenishment.
The 30% difference applies only to purchased credits. Compare the complete subscription bill, including seat pricing, before changing billing interval. An existing self-service annual workspace cannot separately choose the monthly credit arrangement.
Irregular usage also changes the comparison: a larger monthly purchase may expire partly unused, while the annual pool can span uneven months before renewal. Include the timing of the work in your budget.
When an existing ChatGPT subscription helps
The Notion connection guide includes Go, Plus, and Pro for Business or Enterprise members. Guests are ineligible. Each person connects their own account while keeping the required Notion subscription.
The connection replaces Select-funded usage for eligible GPT models you pick manually in Notion Agent, and can avoid corresponding Notion overflow. It never funds Standard work. Auto and Meeting Notes remain on their Notion funding routes, as do non-GPT models and Custom Agents, subject to the exceptions above.
Connect through Settings > Notion AI > Usage > Connected subscriptions, authorize the account, and check the model picker's payer before sending. The same settings let you disable funding or disconnect. If ChatGPT capacity runs out, Notion asks you to switch to workspace Notion credits; it switches back when ChatGPT capacity returns.
OpenAI's partner-app documentation says this draws on the shared Work/Codex allowance. An app's weekly cap sets its maximum share without reserving capacity; usage elsewhere can exhaust the shared balance.
OpenAI also offers separate optional credit overflow for eligible apps. That requires an app cap at 100%, enabled credit use, and available eligible credits. Setting the cap to 100% alone does not authorize paid overflow. The published pages do not establish a precise Notion-specific priority between this option and Notion's own fallback, so check the funding indicators rather than assuming either is automatic.
If OpenAI's automatic credit purchases are enabled, continued usage can trigger charges, potentially without a separate notice when included usage runs out. Signing out of an app also leaves its authorized plan access connected; use the disconnect control when you want that access to end.
Connecting an already-owned plan is most useful when you have spare capacity and the task suits a supported GPT model. It does not solve a Custom Agent bill, a Meeting Notes shortfall, or a non-GPT requirement. If your existing Notion allowances already cover the work, there may be no additional bill to avoid.
Buying a new ChatGPT subscription solely for this purpose needs a different calculation: compare its incremental cost with the workspace credits it would actually replace, and consider the shared capacity you need elsewhere. For broader eligibility and controls, see our guide to using a ChatGPT plan in other apps.
Funding through ChatGPT does not move the session into ChatGPT
Notion says its subprocessor agreements continue to apply, and connected sessions do not appear in ChatGPT history or memory. Its connection documentation describes the link as billing and usage attribution. Connection and privacy FAQ.
The more detailed AI security policy says customer data is not used for model training by default and existing content permissions remain in force. Business AI-provider retention is 30 days or fewer. Enterprise retention varies by model: most offer zero retention, while exceptions require the workspace owner to opt in. Apply those model-specific qualifications when reading the connection FAQ's shorter wording.
The connection FAQ says audit logs expose connection and disconnection events; usage volume is unavailable there. Notion's audit-log documentation limits that feature to Enterprise organization owners. Business administrators should check their available controls separately.
What administrators should check before November 2
Ask members to check their allowance and reset date in Settings > Notion AI > Usage, then estimate work by its funding route. The documented admin dashboard rows show purchased-credit spending, including overflow; they do not establish visibility into every member's Standard and Select balances. Check existing Custom Agents separately, agree which overages the workspace will fund, and include December meetings in the next budget.
Keep permission to spend existing workspace credits distinct from permission to buy more. Notion's Auto Adjust feature is a separate, optional purchasing control. On monthly billing, every adjustment permanently raises the recurring monthly credit amount until you change it. Repeated adjustments build on earlier increases, up to the spending cap. Set that cap deliberately and review the resulting recurring amount. Buying fewer credits next cycle does not disable Auto Adjust; turn it off separately if needed.
Use the workspace purchase and usage controls to monitor consumption and alerts. Fund work that has a clear purpose and review its actual cost before expanding the budget.
Two other billing questions
Are Workers now charged? Workers remains free during beta according to its current English (US) pricing documentation. A Custom Agent that invokes a Worker can still consume credits. Admins can hover over the Free badge in the credits dashboard to see when the free period ends for their workspace.
Do integrations use credits? Ordinary Notion API and MCP reads and writes are credit-free, subject to normal limits. Agent execution through APIs or connected applications can consume workspace credits. See the eligible-features table. For database Autofill, the purchase FAQ explicitly distinguishes Basic Autofill, which does not use Notion credits, from Custom Agent Autofill, which does.
The Choosely verdict
Start by estimating your workload. Auto is a sensible first option for ordinary work that meets your quality requirements; its lower published consumption is useful, but we have not independently verified Notion's quality claims.
Use an existing eligible ChatGPT plan when a supported GPT session fits the job and you can spare the shared capacity. Reserve purchased workspace credits for agreed additional work, legacy or shared automations, and models that require them. Each member's estimated shortfall identifies where to investigate. Only actual purchased-credit usage can show what that overflow costs under your billing arrangement.
