Your Resume Checker Score Is Not the Employer's Hiring Score

Jobscan, Rezi and Teal can help you find missing evidence, unclear wording and possible formatting problems. Their scores tell you about their own checks. An employer may be assessing something different.

An AI resume checker can help you answer a useful question before applying: does your resume clearly show the qualifications this job asks for?

The product documentation we reviewed does not establish a reliable conversion from a consumer resume score to an employer's grade, interview shortlist or hiring decision.

That distinction matters because some employers really do use AI grading. Workday HiredScore documents A-D candidate grades. Other systems evaluate interview answers. A resume checker can help you prepare for part of that process, while leaving important parts unknown.

The useful goal is a resume that makes your relevant experience easy to understand. A higher number is useful only when the change behind it improves the application.

This guide compares product documentation and official guidance. We have not tested these tools against an employer's hiring system.

What does an employer's hiring software actually check?

An applicant tracking system, or ATS, helps an employer manage applications. The system hosting your application may sit alongside separate screening, assessment and interview products.

Think of the possible checks as different questions:

Hiring stepThe question it can addressWhat you can check beforehand
Resume parsingCan the software extract your employment, education and other details?Follow the accepted file formats and inspect any fields the application fills automatically.
Eligibility questionsDo you meet a stated requirement, such as a license, location or work authorization?Read the question carefully and answer accurately. A keyword score cannot supply missing eligibility.
Qualification matchingWhat evidence supports the role's required and preferred qualifications?Map the job requirements to specific, truthful evidence in your resume.
Interview or assessmentWhat do your answers or demonstrated skills show?Prepare genuine examples and follow the instructions for that particular assessment.
Hiring decisionShould this person progress or receive an offer? You cannot reproduce the employer's complete process with a resume-only check.

Not every employer uses every stage, or uses AI at each one. The employer's configuration matters as much as the software's name.

Some systems can reject applications before a person reviews them. The UK Information Commissioner's Office describes screening in which applications below a set threshold never reach a recruiter.

What Jobscan, Rezi and Teal can tell you

These applicant tools can make it easier to compare your resume with a job posting. Their feedback has different meanings.

ToolUseful checkHow to interpret its score
JobscanResume-to-job-description alignment, including skills and formatting feedback.Jobscan describes Match Rate as its own visualization of alignment, separate from a score assigned by an employer's ATS.
ReziAI Keyword Targeting identifies terms from a selected job description and helps you edit your resume.Treat the keyword feedback and Rezi Score as Rezi's own diagnostics.
TealJob Matcher highlights included and missing job-description keywords; Resume Analyzer reviews broader resume content and structure.Match Score and Resume Score answer different questions even inside the same product.

Rezi's documentation describes a workflow of reviewing suggested keywords, generating or editing bullets, and deciding what to include. That last decision belongs to you: suggested wording must remain accurate.

Teal's Resume Analyzer guide ties Resume Score to the Analyzer and Match Score to the Job Matcher. The Analyzer reviews structure and content, including a skills check that uses the matched job. The two scores measure different things, but both can involve job context.

There is no need to start by buying all three. Jobscan advertises five free scans a month. Rezi offers a limited free plan, while Teal limits the keywords visible to free users. Paid features may make repeated editing easier; a subscription does not give you access to the employer's assessment configuration.

Some employers do grade applicants: Workday HiredScore

Workday HiredScore illustrates employer-side qualification grading. Its August 5, 2026 release describes an optional LLM method that checks each qualification against a parsed resume and explains its assessment to recruiters.

Under that method, meeting all scoped basic qualifications puts a candidate in the A/B group. Preferred-qualification matches and basic-qualification scores then distinguish A from B, and C from D.

Employers must opt in, beginning with selected pilot requisitions. After a wider rollout, requisitions opened before the chosen cutover date retain the earlier grading method. An application hosted on Workday alone cannot establish which assessment system or version an employer uses.

Grades can affect progression. Workday's Spotlight documentation says the highest-graded candidates are most likely to reach an interview. It also says a recruiter may still find a C or D candidate suitable. The employer's use of the grade matters.

A missing qualification and missing evidence need different fixes

Suppose a job requires SQL experience. A checker flags SQL as missing. There are several possible explanations:

Your situationThe useful response
You have never used SQL.Recognize the qualification gap. Adding the term would misrepresent your experience.
You use SQL regularly but left it out of the resume.Add a clear, accurate example of the work you did.
You wrote “Structured Query Language” and the checker missed it.Consider using the standard acronym alongside the full term, without changing the underlying facts.
SQL appears in the document but was lost during extraction.Investigate the file layout or parsing problem.

These examples are illustrative; Choosely did not test them. They show why the warning matters more than the total score.

The same principle applies to degrees, licenses, management experience and industry knowledge. AI can help make existing evidence visible. It cannot turn a missing qualification into a genuine one.

A sensible check before you apply

1. Separate required qualifications from preferences

Read the original posting and application questions. Make a short list of mandatory requirements and a separate list of preferred experience.

Keep the employer's wording available. If the distinction is unclear, mark it as unclear instead of letting a tool quietly decide that every listed skill is mandatory.

2. Match each requirement to evidence

For each requirement, point to the line in your resume that supports it. Where you have the experience but the evidence is weak, write a clearer description of the task, responsibility or result.

A general-purpose AI assistant can help organize this comparison. A useful instruction is:

Compare this resume with this job description. Separate required and preferred qualifications. For each item, quote the supporting resume text or say that evidence is missing. Distinguish absent evidence from proof that I lack the skill. Ask questions where needed. Do not invent experience or predict a hiring score.

Check its interpretation against the original documents. The instruction gives it a useful task; it does not make its answers infallible.

3. Check the actual application file

Use a format accepted by the employer. Check that the document contains selectable text and that headings, dates and job descriptions remain intelligible when extracted.

Where the application fills fields from your resume, inspect and correct them before submitting. Workday's Spotlight documentation lists an unsupported resume format among the reasons HiredScore may not produce a grade. A pasted-text comparison cannot establish whether the application parsed your file correctly.

4. Use one checker to investigate specific problems

Look at its evidence and suggestions. Is it flagging a real requirement, suggesting a clearer term or applying its own preferred writing style?

Reject edits that add unsupported claims. If two tools disagree, compare their reasons rather than averaging their scores. Their scales were not designed as interchangeable measurements.

5. Stop when the application is clear and accurate

Repeatedly adding keywords can make a resume harder for a person to read. Once the relevant qualifications are supported, formatting is sensible and application answers are correct, another small score increase may not solve a meaningful problem.

What happens when the employer assesses an interview?

Resume preparation covers only part of an interview assessment.

Sapia's candidate explainer describes an employer-led structured text interview. Its candidate-facing My Insights report gives developmental feedback. It shows no scores, ratings or rankings, and the hiring team cannot see that report. Your interview answers remain part of the application.

Employers receive their own assessment. Sapia's recruiter documentation says Talent Insights reports include scores, rankings and recommendations. It also says the chat interface blocks pasting prewritten text. Prepare examples you can explain in your own words.

HireVue also needs product-specific treatment. In an October 2026 explanation of AI-scored video interviews, it says scoring evaluates what candidates say using interview transcripts, rather than facial expressions, body language, surroundings or tone of voice.

Prepare relevant examples and read the actual assessment instructions. A polished resume does not reveal how those answers will be assessed.

Can you ask to see the employer's AI assessment?

You can ask which provider was used, what it assessed, whether inaccurate information can be corrected and what review process is available. Whether you are entitled to particular information depends on the jurisdiction, the decision and the applicable rules.

For example, the UK Information Commissioner's Office explains safeguards when recruitment decisions are fully automated, including information, challenge and human review. In the US, the Americans with Disabilities Act can require covered employers to provide reasonable accommodations in application tests, subject to the undue-hardship exception.

Neither should be read as a worldwide promise that every applicant can obtain every internal score. Contact the employer's recruitment or privacy team for the process that applies to your application.

Check what you upload, too

A resume can contain your address, employment history and other personal information. Remove details that are unnecessary for a third-party diagnostic and avoid including confidential information from current or former employers.

Read the service's policy on storage, sharing, AI processing and deletion. For example, Teal's policy permits anonymized, aggregated career content to improve its AI models and services. It also says content can be sent to third-party AI providers for processing. Its separate restrictions on Google Workspace data should not be mistaken for a blanket promise about resume content.

Choosely's verdict

Use a resume checker when it helps you identify a real gap, describe relevant experience clearly or investigate a formatting problem. Choose one that explains its feedback well enough for you to act on it.

Treat an employer's assessment as a separate unknown. A consumer score does not reveal the employer's requirements, enabled software or interview judgment. Your best improvement is stronger, truthful evidence for the job you want, not a percentage you cannot connect to the hiring process.

If you want to revisit a checker, open its Jobscan, Rezi or Teal profile and save it to your Choosely account. You will need to sign in to save a tool.

Frequently asked questions

What ATS score do I need to pass?

There is no single pass score established across employers. Jobscan recommends a Match Rate of 75% or higher, while explaining that this is its own visualization. Treat that number as a target inside Jobscan. It does not establish the employer's cutoff.

Can ChatGPT check my resume against a job description?

You can use it to organize the comparison, identify unclear evidence and suggest edits for you to verify. Do not treat its assessment as the employer's score or assume a text-only review tests file parsing.

Should I pay for a resume checker?

Start with the job requirements and a free check where available. Pay only if the editing workflow or usage allowance solves a specific need. More scans do not establish better prediction of an employer's decision.
