Claude or Copilot for PowerPoint: Do You Need Both?

If you already pay for Claude or Microsoft Copilot, check what that subscription gives you before buying another. Both can work inside PowerPoint, and qualifying Copilot users can choose Claude without a separate Claude subscription.

AI-generated editorial illustration of Claude’s add-in and Claude within Microsoft Copilot as two routes into one PowerPoint deck, with Choosely Chimp seated naturally beside the deck. A conceptual illustration, not a product screenshot.

There are two different ways to put Claude inside PowerPoint, plus ways to create a presentation in Claude and download it.

For someone finishing an existing deck, the first question is what they already pay for.

A qualifying paid Claude subscription includes Anthropic’s PowerPoint add-in. A commercial Microsoft Copilot license can provide Claude inside Copilot itself, subject to account, administrator and regional availability.

Neither situation automatically calls for a second AI bill. Both subscriptions become easier to justify when they support different recurring jobs.

Evidence note: This comparison is based on official Anthropic and Microsoft documentation checked on October 19, 2026. Choosely has not tested these PowerPoint workflows or compared their output quality.

First, identify which Claude you mean

RouteWhere you workWhat happens to the presentation
Claude chat and file creationA conversation in ClaudeClaude produces a downloadable PowerPoint file
Claude SlidesClaude’s presentation editorYou edit there, then export to PowerPoint or PDF, or send an editable deck to Google Slides
Anthropic’s PowerPoint add-inA Claude sidebar inside PowerPointClaude works on the open presentation
Claude inside Microsoft CopilotCopilot’s PowerPoint editing experienceCopilot uses the selected model to work on the presentation

The distinction matters when your deck already contains a corporate template, editable charts and material that must remain unchanged.

Downloading another .pptx creates a handoff. Working inside the open presentation avoids that particular handoff, although the changes still need checking.

Anthropic documents downloadable file creation on Free and paid plans. Its Slides editor also supports Free accounts, direct editing and those export options.

An outline or downloadable first draft does not, by itself, require a paid Claude subscription.

If you already have Copilot, check the model selector

Microsoft’s PowerPoint model-selection guide documents Auto, ChatGPT and Claude options in the editing experience. It specifically requires a commercial Microsoft Copilot subscription.

The Copilot Chat included at no extra cost with eligible Microsoft 365 business plans does not establish that entitlement. Seeing a Copilot Chat button is insufficient evidence that you have the PowerPoint selector. Microsoft’s licensing explanation.

To check:

  1. 1Open PowerPoint with the appropriate Microsoft account.
  2. 2Open Copilot and enter editing mode.
  3. 3Look for the model selector in the prompt area or Settings.
  4. 4Choose Claude if it is available.

The choice applies to the active session. Copilot returns to Auto when the session ends.

Claude also depends on your organization’s Anthropic subprocessor settings. Microsoft enables Anthropic by default for most commercial tenants, while the broader provider setting defaults off in the EU, EFTA and UK. Administrators can disable access or restrict it to particular users or groups; additional app-specific settings can apply. Microsoft’s administrator guidance.

This route requires no separate personal Claude subscription. It also does not provide Anthropic’s complete add-in feature set or promise a particular Claude model version. Microsoft’s guide identifies model families.

If Claude is missing, check the account, commercial entitlement, editing mode and applicable tenant settings. Purchasing Claude Pro will not unlock a restricted Copilot selector.

Consumer Microsoft 365 is a separate case

Microsoft includes Copilot features in its consumer plans. Personal currently costs $9.99 monthly, including desktop Office apps.

Microsoft’s consumer editing overview describes Anthropic-powered editing. However, the specific PowerPoint model-switcher guide requires commercial access. Consumer editing features therefore do not establish that you can manually select Claude in PowerPoint.

If you already pay for Claude, the add-in may be enough

Anthropic’s current PowerPoint documentation lists Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise access. Copilot is unnecessary for this route.

Documented features include selected-slide edits, section restructuring, slide-master awareness and native editable charts and diagrams. These establish supported tasks, rather than proven preservation or output quality. Available models are a curated subset, subject to organization permissions.

The supported hosts are PowerPoint web, Windows Microsoft 365 build 16.0.13127.20296 or later, and Mac version 16.46 or later. PowerPoint 2016/2019 perpetual or volume editions, iPad and Android are unsupported.

Installation uses AppSource or administrator deployment. A subscription cannot override company restrictions on external add-ins.

Add-in work draws on your normal Claude usage allowance. Occasional slide edits and repeated full-deck revisions can place very different demands on that allowance.

Both edit decks. Check which context each can use.

Microsoft documents Copilot adding slides, updating content, reorganizing sections and working with design and brand guidance. Anthropic documents overlapping tasks.

Neither feature list establishes which product will preserve your particular template more reliably. The surrounding information and approved workflow may provide a more useful basis for choosing.

Claude can work across open Office files

Anthropic’s cross-app feature lets a conversation span open PowerPoint, Excel, Word and Outlook surfaces with the respective add-ins active.

For example, a presentation can draw on a workbook you have open. The feature cannot directly create, open, close or switch those files, and it is not an entitlement to search the entire Microsoft organization.

Cross-app access is enabled by default on Pro and Max, but disabled by default on Team and Enterprise. Its setting applies per device, and organization owners can control availability.

Claude’s connectors and Skills can add external context and reusable workflows. Access depends on the connections and permissions enabled.

Copilot has broader organizational context, with an important qualification

Licensed Microsoft Copilot can ground responses in organizational content through Microsoft Graph, including documents, email, meetings and chats, limited to information the user can view. Microsoft’s privacy documentation.

Microsoft describes its broader work-context layer as Work IQ. Its PowerPoint editing guide, however, does not specify which organizational sources the in-app editor retrieves.

If your buying decision depends on “find the latest approved information across our company, then update this deck,” confirm that exact workflow with your organization. General Copilot capabilities do not prove that every source is available inside PowerPoint.

Claude Team standard covers teams of 2 to 150. It adds business features and costs $25 per seat monthly, or $20 per seat per month with annual billing. Pro is an individual reference, not a substitute for assessing a company’s required plan.

An included add-in does not mean unlimited usage. Optional Claude usage credits, if enabled after reaching a limit, bill at standard API rates.

For a complete business example, Business Standard with Teams costs $16.80 monthly. Adding Claude Pro produces a $36.80 total. Adding the separate $25.20 Copilot subscription instead produces $42.00 per user.

The inclusive Standard-with-Copilot bundle is listed at $28.20 monthly. Existing customers should check whether they can switch, and the effect of their current commitment, before stacking an add-on onto the old bill. These configurations are reference paths rather than the cheapest arrangement for every buyer.

Annual offers need separate labels. Claude Pro is $200 paid annually. Copilot Business’s standard annual rate is $21 per user per month, with an eligible first-year $18 promotion currently running through December 31, 2026.

Enterprise agreements and provider deployments need their own calculations. Seat charges, usage and infrastructure can all matter.

Company decks need an approved route

Claude inside Copilot and Anthropic’s add-in have different processing and governance arrangements.

For standard Anthropic models acting as Microsoft subprocessors, Microsoft says its Product Terms, Data Protection Addendum and Enterprise Data Protection apply. Anthropic processing is nevertheless excluded from the EU Data Boundary and, where applicable, in-country processing commitments. Separately labeled models with Data Retention have different controls and terms. Microsoft subprocessor documentation.

Anthropic’s add-in does not inherit custom organization retention settings. Its activity is excluded from Enterprise audit logs, while PowerPoint sessions are included in Enterprise Compliance API coverage in public beta. Backend inputs and outputs are deleted within 30 days, subject to documented exceptions, with additional hours-long caching. PowerPoint data handling.

Local storage is separate. Anthropic’s storage guide says histories can contain document content Claude read and attached PowerPoint files. The add-in retains the latest 50 conversations per user, organization and Office app, with no age-based expiry or administrator-set retention window.

Reinstalling does not clear that history. Browser storage eviction can remove it in PowerPoint web.

Files attached through a Claude account are uploaded to Anthropic. Current versions normally set a 28-day expiry, but the documentation identifies exceptions, including organizations where expiry is not accepted and uploads from older versions.

Microsoft documents stored Copilot interactions and administrator retention controls through Purview. Recovering an earlier deck and auditing an AI conversation remain separate requirements.

Organizations can also deploy Anthropic’s add-in through Bedrock, Vertex AI, Azure AI Foundry or a gateway. Those routes have different costs and currently lack some direct-account features, including cross-app work, connectors and Skills. Enterprise deployment comparison.

Personally buying a subscription does not make a company presentation approved for that service.

When neither extra subscription is necessary

An outline, a rough draft or a few manual changes may not justify another recurring payment.

Claude’s free file-generation and Slides routes can cover an initial attempt. An existing Microsoft subscription may already provide useful Copilot features. PowerPoint’s ordinary tools remain available for straightforward edits.

If you are choosing a presentation platform from scratch, our AI presentation-tool guide addresses that broader decision.

For existing decks, keep a recoverable original and inspect chart values, sources, editable objects, missing content and formatting before delivery. Files from external sources can also contain instructions intended to manipulate an assistant, so review proposed actions carefully.

We have no controlled evidence here that either product produces better layouts, finishes faster or needs less cleanup. Those claims would require testing.

Choosely verdict

Most PowerPoint users should start with one approved route they already have.

Existing Claude subscribers can consider Anthropic’s included add-in. Employees licensed for commercial Copilot should check its Claude option before purchasing a separate account.

Both subscriptions can earn their place when they cover distinct recurring needs, such as approved Microsoft work alongside broader Claude research, connectors or Skills. Access to the same model family in two interfaces is insufficient justification on its own.

For occasional outlines, exported drafts and small edits, neither additional subscription may be necessary.

The second bill should correspond to a job your current setup cannot adequately cover.

FAQ

Do I need Claude Pro to select Claude inside Copilot?

No separate personal Claude subscription is required for Microsoft’s commercial PowerPoint model-selection route. You need the appropriate Microsoft entitlement and applicable organization access.
